Why Worship Remains Relevant
Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. (Hebrews 13:15)
Debie Thomas’ article in The Christian Century entitled “What is worship for?” challenged me to consider my beliefs about why I worship God. Thomas makes the thought-provoking statement, “Surely God isn’t a narcissist who demands our attention.” Her premise is that God does not demand or expect our worship because that would make God a narcissist.
God calls us to worship but not to fill a divine emotional need. Thomas reminds us, “To be clear, this God we’re commanded to worship is a servant God, one who grew up a peasant under empire, washed the feet of his disciples, rode a donkey into Jerusalem, and wept at his beloved friend’s graveside. This is a God who ‘emptied himself…” Her description confirms, “This is no narcissist.” Thomas believes we worship because our hearts “…can be softened into servanthood, gentleness, humility, and love.” Thomas believes worship is a gift, “Not for God’s benefit, but for mine,” and yours.
I appreciate Rev. Thomas’s reflections and affirm what she raises. I would like to add my reflection without diminishing any of her thoughts. I declare the need to worship our Triune God, honoring God’s Almighty power, love, grace, and mercy. Glorifying God is vital because it reminds the faithful that the divine One is worthy of our thanks and praise. We live in a secular society that worships humanity as a god. Divine worship celebrates God's omnipotence and loving care but reminds us of our human inability to make a lasting difference apart from God.
Today, think about why you attend worship. Write a brainstorming list. Brainstorming allows for all the other subtle ways worship speaks to our souls. For example, I would include feeling God in the music and hymns sung and heard. Worship provides the opportunity to experience the energy and love of others in our church family. Learning is also on my list. Scripture proclaimed becomes a teachable moment from the pastor’s knowledge and the way the Spirit speaks to the heart and mind. Finally, consider examples of how worship softened your faith and renewed your trust in God’s power and love. Doing so will reaffirm your commitment to regularly worship our God.
