You Are a Spiritual Artist
written by Rev. Dr. Scott Paczkowski
“For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.”
Each of us is a spiritual artist. Some refuse to pick up their creative tools, while others find many excuses for why they never quite create. For the person of faith, living is the greatest creative process is as real as breathing. The act of creating yourself is a lifelong discipline you cannot do alone. Creating you requires more than just your own hand and mind. Only when you invite God and other trusted artists into your life can you be molded into the profound work of art God intended.
You, turning into a brilliant work of art, is not guaranteed. Many are unwilling to pick up the artist’s tools and do the daily work necessary to hone their craft. Instead of the paintbrush, knitting needles, or chisel, the spiritual artist crafts life from their mind and heart. We carve our being by chipping away at the unnecessary and polishing our values, faith, and truth. In molding the art that is us, the decisions are not just about right and wrong but also which, why, and how. We define ourselves with a million little carved decisions, repeatedly creating anew.
Along with the other decision-making, we must consider what we will create each day. If we are making only what society deems beautiful, successful, or clever, then we are left with a deeply flawed piece of art of little or no value. Therefore, we are worth more and must avoid the trivial and focus on what has lasting value. When we recognize ourselves as valuable and worth time and effort, then we are willing to nurture the spiritual art that is us.
If God values us, then we ought to value ourselves by working on the artistry within. Your daily prayers, Scripture reading, and looking with compassion on the needs of others are the tools that carve out the unique artistry that is us. Seeing the value and artistry within is not arrogance, but the humble notion that you have so much work to do that only you and God can do, to take this imperfect person and make them shine with the light of God.
