Responding Faithfully in Horrific Times

written by Rev. Dr. Scott Paczkowski

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
— Isaiah 41:10

Whether you are empathizing with friends and family suffering due to the California fires or feeling a sense of dome over our political situation, the feeling of being overwhelmed is something we all occasionally feel (or not so occasionally). Life can be harsh, and we will always need to turn to God for the support of the Holy Spirit. Yet, God’s Spirit doesn’t present itself like a magic trick. Instead, we work hand-in-hand with the Spirit to transform our situation.

Do not simply ask God to fix the situation. Instead, recognize that we are in a relationship with the divine One, and the Spirit works through us. In our moments of angst, ask God to empower us to find the wisdom, guidance, and nuanced care to address our emotional responses to feeling crushed. Naming the healing support will help us envision the pathway to healthy acceptance.

When the Spirit diminishes the wave of emotion, we can break down the challenges into smaller issues, moving us on a surer path to restoration. For example, when we hear the news of a job loss, we can find someone who can provide professional advice. Next, we can rewrite our resume and place it on the recommended platforms to be seen by prospective employers. We can humbly prepare for our new situation by reviewing our financials and creating a process to address our new reality honestly. Will it be painful? Absolutely. Responding quickly and rationally doesn’t alleviate the ache but will provide the best way forward.

A simple, multi-step process provides something other than the mess to focus on. Further, it empowers us, giving a sense of control necessary to respond proactively. Some challenges are too painful or horrific to address alone. It is not a mark of sin or lack of faith to say, “God and I need more help.” It isn’t that God cannot do it, but God desires others to step into the process. God recognizes that community is beneficial for the long-term healing and restoration of destructive situations. Trust and remain open in painful times, and God will guide you to renewed wholeness.
