Jesus means more than just Five Letters Atop a 60-foot Sign!

written by Rev. Dr. Scott Paczkowski

An intelligent mind acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
— Proverbs 18:15

The United States President and Iowa governor’s attacks on our public school system remain an act of violence against the foundation of the Christian faith. The diminishment of the public school system is anathema to our religion, which we, the faithful, base on The Book. God is revealed in the Bible, but when future generations cannot read well or exhibit complex thoughts, God’s revelation is lost.

When our politicians base their decision-making on selfish, short-term financial considerations, society suffers, and the gospel message is lost. Sure, religious charlatans can take even more advantage of ignorant people and reframe Christianity into an emotional, charismatic cult focused on individual salvation without any consideration for learning how God worked in the Biblical past and throughout human history. Further, focusing only on personal salvation reaffirms that caring for anyone other than the self is a waste of time. Quickly, the Christian faith looks nothing like Jesus Christ, the human reflection of God. There is no greater idolatry than what I just described.

Sadly, I am not describing a fictional account but our reality that continues to chip away at the foundation of our Biblical faith. Presently, in Johnston, Iowa, a church believes that a 60-foot sign next to a major highway, with only the word “Jesus” at the top, is a great marketing strategy. Christian stupidity is growing by the day. Soon, the US President and Iowa governor’s sinful plan will necessitate all churches to have only five letter signs because the state of education will be so poor that no one will be able to read anything more complicated.

If you think harsh talk does not belong in the church, to say nothing of a devotion, I encourage you to pick up your Bible and read it. The United States became the most powerful nation in the world primarily because of Christian denominations stepping up and creating educational opportunities for all people, knowing that education is the foundation of every great society. Further, a society without educated people will not know their religion’s ideals and fall into moral decay. Pray for the morals of our present political leadership and the courage to act to defend our public schools. If we do not act, our society and the Christian religion may cease to exist meaningfully and faithfully.
