Do Miracles Still Exist?
written by Rev. Dr. Scott Paczkowski
“And she said, ‘Who would ever have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.’”
Miraculous things can happen when we trust and have faith in God. Abraham and Sarah had faith when all seemed lost. God even forgave Sarah’s doubts and continued to carry through on the miracle. If we remain firm in our faith, God will overlook our doubts and fears.
If you asked me if I’ve ever personally witnessed a divine miracle, I would have to say “no.” Yet, I would have to preface my “no” with a strong “maybe.” I have watched people live who should have died. I have watched couples on the brink of despair somehow put aside their bitterness and resentment and preserve and renew their marriages. I have watched individuals who were deeply overwhelmed by the evil clutches of drug and alcohol abuse find a way to face the demon and, through divine strength, say “no,” not just once but every day for the rest of their earthly days.
So, why did I say that I had not witnessed a miracle? Perhaps because I, like so many others, think the only Godly miracles are those worthy of a Cecil B. DeMille movie. I answer “no” if a miracle must be as large as parting a sea. But I believe, more often than not, God is more subtle. Many subtle miracles can be even more profound than one fish swallowing a man.
Today, reflect on remarkable moments you’ve witnessed in your life. Think about it and do not give up too quickly because we’ve all seen miraculous moments. Then, think of a moment that might have been a miracle in your life. I believe God provides little and big miracles to stimulate our hope and overcome our cynicism. Miracles are not to glorify the recipient but to focus once again on the divine creator of all miracles, great and small.
