FBI or School Bus Driver, which is more important?

Written by Rev. Dr. Scott Paczkowski

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
— (Jeremiah 29:11)

Who knew Jesus was a retired FBI agent and a school bus driver? Mike Mason has a resume anyone would love to possess. Mason was the FBI's fourth highest-ranking official. He was also successful in the private sector. Then, after a meaningful and lucrative career, Mike Mason retired. Then Covid hit.

He was sitting on his large front porch, overlooking a beautiful yard, when he read about the local public school's struggles getting bus drivers. FBI agent Mike Mason, who met with Presidents, decided he could be of assistance in a meaningful way. So, God pricked his conscience, and he became a school bus driver in his home of Midlothian, VA.

Mason has the shiniest bus in the fleet because his military background calls on him to polish his bus every week. When asked why a person with such a decorated career would make the transition to driving a school bus full of boisterous kids, Mason responds, "I feel the same sense of duty."

Like Mike Mason, we can be defined by more than our jobs or his post-retirement career in Mason's case. Those kids have no idea how powerful their bus driver was before he retired. They only see a kind man who smiles and greets each one of them every morning and afternoon. They see a man who safely brings them to and from school each day. Some would say driving a school bus in a pandemic is even more important than a boring meeting in the oval office. Prayerfully ask God to provide a vocational opportunity at each stage of your life that makes a meaningful difference in your life and the life of others.
