Blessing God’s Garden, Sunday June 11th
Please join us Sunday in a blessing of our God’s Garden for a bountiful harvest to help feed the hungry in Des Moines. After the closing hymn, Pastor Scott will lead a procession to the garden for the blessing and benediction.
God’s Garden is a faith garden designed for giving to others, helping those less fortunate; faith gardens are grown to be enjoyed by God and the community. Our God’s Garden has been a community effort to grow produce for others, bringing people together for a goal of feeding others.
God’s Garden began in 2013 with establishment of the first garden plot in land provided by Calvin Community. In 2018, God’s Garden partnered with Lutheran Services in Iowa to repurpose an under-utilized 1/4 acre portion of our northwest parking lot into a new community garden for refugee families.
It gave them an opportunity to share their gardening culture with their children and the community. Today, the garden provides 20 garden plots for refugee families and two plots for Westminster.
The garden has been successful, involving many volunteers. Over the summer months, our garden plots have produced approximately 20-50 pounds of fresh produce weekly for DMARC while also generating much needed financial resources for DMARC through fresh produce cash donations received from church service attendees on Sunday mornings.
The blessing of the garden is a reminder to care for the garden and tend to it regularly as well as helping create a sense of community as we come together to share in the blessings and abundance of our garden. We hope you will join us!
