Missions

Mission is a core value of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

There are lots of opportunities to serve in the community as well as globally.  While reaching out in mission during a pandemic is challenging, Westminster has been able to continue our work.  Our mission activities have had to undergo some changes to ensure safety but it has not stopped our work.

  • Prepare and serve meals to feed approximately 250 people, including deserts made by a group of generous bakers at Westminster.

  • Serving the Shelter Meals involves many groups at Westminster

Provide food for local elementary schools

  • Local elementary schools provide breakfast and lunches that sometimes are the best source of nutrition for students. To help address hunger when not in school, the Buddies program provides food for the mid-school year holiday breaks.

    • Students are given bags of food items to provide a source of nourishment until the next week begins again.

    • In 2019 we were able to provide nearly 8500 bags to students at Edmunds, Morris, and Holy Family

    • Given COVID and school changes, we are currently providing food for Holy Family

Family Promise, helps homeless families achieve stable housing and income through compassionate care, hospitality and professional support.

  • Provide in-kind donations of Day Care space, allowing for clients of Family Promise, families with children who are transitioning out of homelessness to have a safe space and coaching assistance in getting back on their feet

  • Hosting overnight guests for a week twice a year, involving volunteers providing evening meals and overnight hosts

  • Provide space for two additional host weeks for Holy Trinity Church

  • Participate in the Family Promise Comfort Food Cook-Off Fundraiser in November

Church & World Committee

  • Focuses on Westminster’s relationship with our sister-church in Szeged, Hungary and Our Sister Parish in El Salvador.

  • The committee continues to monitor and provide financial support, for example:

    • Provide funds to purchase fertilizer for farming families in the cantons to help increase crop production

    • Fund raiser for food baskets as there remains a need for food

    • Five scholarships provided to high school students, enabling them to complete their education

  • In the past, we were able to send a delegation that stayed with host families, further strengthening relationships. Participation in their daily life broadened cultural understanding.

Director of Connections and Outreach

Susan Denton

Before taking this position, I had the opportunity to work with Lisa Anderson who was a great mentor for me. She instilled in me the importance of our mission work and appreciation of staying connected as a church family. To see the impact our mission work has made in our community and globally is truly rewarding. Working with the many volunteers at Westminster is an absolute joy!
