The Real World

Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (Matthew 6:34)

In college and seminary, I would talk about graduating and joining the "real world." My life would begin when I became ordained—what a mistake. The real world is every second of every day you live on this earth. Wishing the present away in favor of a better future can be admirable when striving for a specific, worthwhile goal, but not as a daily activity. God has blessed us with thousands of present moments that remain unique gifts to be cherished.

We tend to think of cherished moments as events like births, baptisms, graduations, and weddings. This mindset severely limits the Spirit's ability to impart new, profound experiences. If we continually look beyond the moment, our lives will slide by without recognizing the many opportunities around us. God has a plan for our lives that includes focusing on the here and now because it is in the present where we experience positive change.

In high school, I worked at Hardee's. The owner supported my outside activities and allowed me to start work after Cross Country or play practice. When I started working at Hardee's, I had a full day at school and practice. As a result, I was often exhausted and didn't want to be on my feet for several more hours. Yet, every workday, something fascinating or meaningful would occur. I would meet a new friend or be a listening ear to a coworker. Even being friendly while performing my duties behind the cash register could lift the spirits of a lonely patron.

Today, reflect on moments in your life when you were fully present and blessed with meaning. Sometimes, the most meaningful things occur in unlikely moments, so focusing on what is right in front of you is best. First, prayerfully ask God to provide the focus necessary to remain in the moment. Then, ask God for the wisdom to notice when an opportunity for meaning arrives. The more you recognize God moments in your life, the more you can remain available to divine opportunities in your real world.
