God Behind the Science

"Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine,…" (Ephesians 3:20)

When I think about the power of the human mind to create, I am genuinely amazed. Medical advancements seem more miraculous every day. When a doctor can go into a person's vein at a person's wrist and insert a stint into a person's heart, life is fantastic. It is incredible when individuals can create phones with more powerful computers than the room-sized computers that put Apollo 11 on the moon and make them cheap enough to be just another part of human life.

This passage reminds us that God's "power is at work within us." We humans can "accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine" because God is at work through the Holy Spirit. God is guiding the human race in productive and remarkable ways. All these advancements can work for good or ill. They can heal or be manipulated for destructive purposes. Just as God works through us to create and advance, God also works through us in matters of ethics, so we advance in healthy, faithful ways.

Today, pray for our world and all the advancements taking place. Thank God for guiding us in making the world more connected and healthy. Ask God to guide us, as people of faith, to help people realize that we are not gods but simply God's divine conduits. Ask God to redirect our world to recognize the spiritual behind all our most extraordinary efforts. We need to fear our propensity for corruption. May this reality drive us to our knees so we can rely on God's guidance now and always.
