New Sanctuary Art for the Baptism of Jesus

The Visual Arts Committee has created new Sanctuary art to represent the Baptism of Jesus, which will be the focus of worship on Sunday, January 7.

At the front of the Sanctuary, two banners will be displayed on the organ. These banners use ribbon, fabric strips and sparkling tear-drop beads to portray the flowing waters of the River Jordan where John the Baptist baptized Jesus. The banners also include the image of a descending dove. According to Scripture, as Jesus received the sacrament, the heavens were opened and the Spirit of God descended upon him like a dove. The image of the dove is repeated on the dark blue banners along the sides of the Sanctuary. As you contemplate the Baptism of Jesus, you are invited to consider your own Baptism and the outpouring of God’s Holy Spirit upon you.

Matthew 3:16-17

And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw God’s Spirit descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from the heavens said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”
