We Are Westminster

We are Westminster...
  • We Worship with Tradition: We are called to gather together and bring Glory to God through tradition.
  • We Connect as a Church Family: We are called to grow together as a supporting, loving community.
  • We Engage in Mission: We are called, not just to fund God’s mission, but to join with God who is making a difference in our world, person to person.
  • We Raise 21st Century Disciples: We are called to teach and nurture our children, to offer them a faith that lasts a lifetime and send them out to change our world, for the kingdom of God.

We Worship With Tradition

At Westminster we worship with tradition and honor our origins through traditional musical responses and historic, familiar hymns.

  • Music is a form of prayer that brings us closer to God.
  • Each worship service is thoughtfully and carefully crafted to interweave Scripture, prayer, music and the spoken word.
  • Our worship is intergenerational and inclusive.
  • Our children and youth learn about, participate in and lead our services.
  • We celebrate the visual and musical arts with paintings, our chancel and summer choirs, handbells, bitty-bells, an intergenerational band and guest musicians.

God is calling us to make an impact in 2019 through our:

  • Preaching about Contemporary Issues: Our preaching will continue to bring Scripture to bear on the everyday issues in our lives and our world.
  • Handbells: Bringing adult and youth handbells back into worship.
  • Kids Worship: Giving kids an opportunity to learn what traditional worship is, how to participate in it and how to lead us as a congregation.

Our pastors will continue to address contemporary issues and will encourage us to learn more about those topics, and how they affect our journey in faith.

We Raise 21st Century Disciples

We are called to teach and nurture our children, to offer them a faith that lasts a lifetime and send them out, to change our world for the kingdom of God.

  • Baptism: We welcome our children into God’s covenant community and take vows to raise them to know and follow Jesus Christ.
  • Westminster Preschool : We provide love and structure to growing children in a non-proclamational ministry of care and education to our community.
  • Vacation Bible School: With play, creativity, music and storytelling we share the Good News of God’s kingdom with our neighborhood children.
  • Wednesday Youth Club: Rev. Orr taught the nation how to do midweek youth ministry through our congregation from 1939-1948, a program that brought 2000 new members in 8 years. We seek to follow his example.
  • SUMMIT: Our college students receive scholarships through summer service internships serving in our community

God is calling us to make an impact in 2019 through our Rejuvenated Youth Programs.

  • Sunday School: We have revamped our Sunday school into an engaging weekly rotating model of teaching through technology, science, art and music.
  • Kids’ Club K-5th: Wednesday nights kids are forming relationships with peers and adult role models, and learning biblical literacy through high-energy games and play.
  • WPC Youth 6th- 12th: Wednesday nights our youth are gathering together with high-energy play, learn what their faith means in our multicultural, multi-faith world.
  • Youth Mission Trips: Our Junior and Senior High groups travel around our country doing mission work.

We are committed - as we see kids getting baptized we make a commitment to those kids, to help them in their faith. - Faith Huitt

We Connect as a Church Family

We are called to grow together as a supporting, loving community.

At Westminster we have a tradition of connection through:

  • Small Groups: We’ve connected through Koinonia Groups, Restaurant Groups, Men’s Groups and more!
  • Education Classes: We’ve connected in Adult Education classes on Sundays and Wednesday nights.
  • Fellowship groups: We have connected through  Tuesday Fellowship Club, our Basketball group and more.
  • All Church Activities: We have gathered at Picnics, Advent Workshops and Trivia Nights.

God is calling us to make an impact in 2019 through our:

  • New Connection Groups: We are inviting new groups to form, to knit our members together.
  • All Church Intergenerational Events: Every month we have intergenerational events to get to know one another better.
  • Sunday “B” Hour: Coming out of worship, we invite everyone to spend time in fellowship, that flows into small groups, classes or casual conversation.

My family and I found a home and a church family at Westminster, and are passionate about telling others as we value the church as a place that is actively engaging and inclusive of all.

We Engage in Mission

We are called not just to fund God’s mission, but to join with God who is making a difference in our world, person to person.

At Westminster we have a rich history of making an impact in our world through:

  • Family Promise: Westminster Presbyterian Church provides space for their offices and Day Center at no charge. Today, Westminster’s generosity saves FPGD over $25,000 per year.
  • Shelter Meals: Westminster has a long-standing history of preparing and serving the evening meal to residents at the Central Iowa Shelter and services 8-9 times per year.
  • International Mission Trips: Westminster has formed partnerships with sister communities in El Salvador and Hungary.  These relationships provide the opportunity for
life-changing mission trips to both countries, as well as long-term mission projects.

God is calling us to make an impact in 2019 through our:

  • Monroe Elementary School: We have been invited to get to know the needs of the multinational families at Monroe Elementary, support their families and learn how we can bring love and reconciliation to their community.
  • God’s Refugee Garden: We offer space for 20 refugee families to garden and fellowship with us. Community gardening helps support refugee assimilation and stabilizes refugee families by reconnecting farmers with the land, as they build their new life in the U.S.
I am excited for us to get to know our neighbors at Monroe Elementary School; to build relationships with families from all over the world. - Lisa Anderson
