Gilead is October Book Club Choice
You are invited to join the Westminster Book Club in October for discussion of the book Gilead by Marilynne Robinson.Gilead won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, as well as the National Book Critics Circle Award.
This powerful novel is the fictional autobiography of the Reverend John Ames, an elderly Congregationalist pastor in the small town of Gilead, Iowa. Rev. Ames knows he is dying of a heart condition, so he decides to write an account of his life for his seven-year-old son. Through the telling of his life story, he reveals an important truth: that faith can be found even in the quiet, everyday moments of life, rather than in the dramatic triumphs or failures one encounters along the way.
Newsweek Magazine’s review had this to say about Gilead: “Good novels about spiritual life are rare. This is one of the best.”
The Book Club will discuss this book on Wednesday, October 5, at 6:30 p.m. in Simmerman Lounge. All readers are welcome. While they last, books from the public library’s book discussion set are available for check-out in the church office, or you may borrow, download or purchase the book on your own.
