Jerry Maguire Didn't Complete Her
For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well. (Psalm 139:13-14)
People get married and/or have children for many reasons. Sadly, too many times individuals look for their spouse or children to “complete me.” I really hate that phrase from the movie, “Jerry Maguire.” Only God can complete you! When we expect our spouse or our children to complete us, we end in frustration and even despair.
Once again writer Kris Gage speaks to this issue. In her article, “Your Self Esteem Is Not Your Partner’s Responsibility.” She confirms, “Sometimes we’re insecure simply because we haven’t done the work of developing solid self-esteem.” She continues, “And there’s certainly no ‘quick fix’ somebody else is equipped to give.” Your spouse and your children might be wonderful, but they are not God. They do not have the power to transform your insecurities and affirm your worth.
Gage calls us to, “Take responsibility for your self-esteem.” Most of us can struggle our whole lives and never experience self-worth. We cannot do it ourselves. When we turn to God in prayer God’s Spirit fills and transforms us. It gives us the energy to focus beyond ourselves and care for others. When God’s Spirit fills us and we care for others, God multiplies our confidence and self-esteem. Soon, we are able to love our spouse and children without needing them to meet our needs.
Today, ask God to address your insecurities. Now, before you get testy, everyone – including you and me – struggles with self-esteem. If we do not have self-esteem issues, we are either totally narcissistic or not taking on enough challenges. When we reach out to God in prayer, worship, and mission, we are placing the need where it belongs. Christ is our only Messiah. Only Jesus can save us. Not our spouse, not our children – just the one Savior of the universe. Now, go love your spouse and children, and let God complete you.
