God Behind the Science

“Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine…” (Ephesians 3:20)

When I think about the power of the human mind to create, I am truly amazed. Medical advancements seem more miraculous every day. When a doctor can go in a vein at a person’s wrist, and insert a stint into a person’s heart, life is amazing. When individuals can create phones that have computers more powerful than the room-sized computers that put Apollo 11 on the moon, and make them cheap enough that they are just another part of human life, it is amazing.

What this passage reminds us is that God’s “power is at work within us.” We humans are “able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine,” because God is at work through the Holy Spirit. God is guiding the human race in productive and remarkable ways. All these advancements can work for good or ill. They can heal or be manipulated for destructive purposes. Just as God is working through us to create and advance, God also works through us in matters of ethics, so we advance in healthy, faithful ways.

Today, pray for our world and all the advancements taking place. Thank God for guiding us in making the world a more-connected, healthy place. Ask God to guide us, as people of faith, to help people realize that we are not our own gods, but simply God’s Divine conduits. Ask God to redirect our world to recognize the spiritual behind all our greatest efforts. Let us definitely fear our propensity for corruption. May this reality drive us to our knees, so we can rely on God’s guidance now and always.
